Recent Developments at HEAR

During our most recent visit to Haiti we had very successful meetings with a number of educators and non-profit organizations. The most telling was our two meetings with Msgr. Pierre Andre Pierre the President of Notre Dame Universities of Haiti. At the first we talked about our scholarship program and the Concordia University in Portland.

That was followed by discussions about our BonZeb project in Thomonde. Here is were things got interesting. On our visit to Hinche a few days earlier I had notice a new Notre Dame school along the highway. Come to know that this is the newest campus for UNDH and it has schools for nursing, biology and bio-engineering. Bio-Engineering right in our back yard, so to speak.

Msgr. Pierre brought up a student he would like us to consider for our scholarship and then asked if we could meet again before we left. He wanted to introduce us to the director of the school in Hinche.

Of we went the next day to meet with another NGO and to talk about another candidate. This meeting took a different turn as the the original meeting didn't happen, but the one that did introduced us to a young lady who had recently been accepted to the UNDH school of Nursing in Hinche. The draw back is that she could not afford the tuition. Question: Can you help?

Well, HEAR was set up to assist students coming to the US for advanced studies and not domestic students in undergrad programs. We needed to talk with our board.

Then the following day Msgr Pierre came to visit and with him was a friend and collaborator, who happened to have a PHD in Agriculture and was delighted to hear about BonZeb and its efforts in Haiti and about how well we are paying our employees. There is great interest in collaboration with all parties.

Then it is my turn to make a request. Our young lady from Leveque, could she possibly get some assistance from the school to attend NDUH in Hinche.

It was after this meeting that the board talked things over and decided to ammend our mandate and mission to include scholarships for students in Haiti. $1,000 can pay for a year of school. We would like to invite you to help us put 10 students into university this year. Ten students at a cost of $10,000, almost the same cost as room and board for one student here in Portland. We still have two scholarships students here and need the $15,000 to cover those expenses. That is a total of $25,000 for 12 students to accomplish their dreams and make a difference in their own lives, in their country and in the world.

40th Anniversary Fundraiers

Having just celebrating Thanksgiving Day, experiencing Black Friday and looking forward to Giving Tuesday we would like to also honor our parents and founders, who were married on November 26th, 1977.

This week they celebrate their 40th anniversary. They don't want any gifts. They don't want to take a big trip. They want to mark the occasion by raising money for a good cause.

Whether finding scholarships for HEAR, fundraising for schools, or hosting countless visitors in their home, Mom and Dad have been helping people in Haiti for years.

Their current project is HEAR, a small charity with a simple mission, to give the brightest and poorest students of Haiti the opportunity to study in the US. Education is the main way a person can change the trajectory in their lives.

HEAR is happy to announce that its current MAT candidate will graduate in December. She has done well in her studies and is actually graduating 5 months early. She will be looking for an internship for the next year and then plans to return to Haiti a start a school in a small community on the out skirts of Croix des Bouquets.

In January our next student will begin her MBA studies. So the tradition continues.

HEAR has another scholarship available and will be looking to fill it in January. HEAR needs your help. If you haven't in the past, this is an occasion to make a donation for an excellent cause and honor the lives and commitment of our founders.

Any money they raise will go directly to helping students cover their expense for housing, food, travels, etc.

Our current goal is to raise $4000, one hundred dollars for every year of marriage, but the ultimate goal is to riase $40,000. Anything you can give is a great help. Please consider a donatiion of $40, $400 or even $4000.

New applicants for Scholarships

HEAR is happy to have another candidate in the pipe line for acceptance at Concordia University in Portland.

Natacha Verly is ready to enroll in the Spring, if the living funds are in place for her to come to Portland. Natacha

The schools of Business has accepted her into their MBA program for 2018.

On another note, Marie Michele will be graduating in December 2017, a semester earlier than expected. She is a very motivated young lady who spends a few days a week volunteering as a Spanish teacher for adults in a local school.

She is also developing plans with our team to build a school in the out skirts of Croix des Bouquets, Haiti. when she returns. She is looking for an internship in school administration for 2018, so that she can put into practice what she has learned over the past 18 months.

Thank you for your continued support for this program. Your donations go directly to the students to help them with their living expenses. Our goal is to raise $6,000 per student per year. Please think big when considering how you might help us meet the needs of our students.

In addition to our work with CU Portland, we continue to work with the Univesity of Portland Shiley School of Engineering where we have our third team of senior capstone students working on our kiln modifications. These teams have been a true blessing to our team and we look forward to what they will develop in the coming year. We would like to raise $2500 for their continued work and to help with its implementation.

Finally, during the past year we have been developing a relationship with Universitie Notre Dame d'Haiti, whose president Msgr Pierre Andre Pierre, is interesting in not only sending promising students to our program in Portland, but also having his students intern at our factory and farm in Boucantis and Benico.

So as fall comes and classes resume HEAR has many things to look forward to in the coming months.
