HSR is a growing community supporting refugees to teach, develop skills and become empowered through sport. This project is a unique synergy between Yoga and Sport with Refugees, Habibi.Works and KOIZ. Now, we offer a full weekly schedule of sports for all. Our inclusive and community-led approach allows us to adapt to the needs of our community and facilitate positive development for our project and participants. We need your support to improve and expand the scope and impact of HSR.
HSR supports over 500 refugees in North West Greece every month through sport activities. Our project is led by our community. Part of this means all of our teachers are refugees and asylum seekers. We support our teachers with training, mentorship and a small financial compensation of 50 a month. Unfortunately, the organisation who were supporting us to provide this compensation are no longer in a position to do so. In HSR, this means we have a 500 per month gap in our budget for this year.
Providing our teachers with a small direct cash stipend in addition to other development and training opportunities has allowed us to support families and individuals who are not entitled to the already meagre social welfare provided by the Greek government. With your support, we can continue this vital component of the project and ensure that money in our current budget does not have to be directed away from other strategic priorities like the expansion and professionalisation of the project.
The provision of certification, financial support and training for our teachers gives them unique career and life experience which they can use into the future. Financial support also emowers people, gives them more agency over their spending, and reduces dependency. This campaign will have a direct impact on 10 refugee teachers over 1 year, which will in turn impact the lives of over 2000 refugees and local Greek people attending these teachers classes.
