Almost 6 months after the destructive eruption of the Fuego Volcano on June 3, it violently reactivated for 23 hours with great explosions of lava, ash and pyroclastic material on November 19. It showed once again to be a real threat to all those communities that live around the volcano and that were never given a new house where they could be permanently out of danger. However, one of these communities had advance warning.
Lex and Helena, residents of Antigua, together with their families and friends, have been helping these communities for the last five months with food and many other things, and had also installed the emergency alarm system a few weeks ago in one of the affected communities, and on November 19, it alerted the community to evacuate.
One week before the latest eruption, CasaSito had a meeting with Lex, and he presented this project of emergency alarms to us as an effective way to assist the communities living in this area.
As a team, we have decided to support this project and to install more alarm systems with the goal that all communities at risk in this area will have a system of sirens/alarms. There is so much work to do and to organize next year. We hope to install more alarm systems together with system training and to make this project our primary focus of our emergency support.
