Training in Kitchen Gardening for Women

By Shehroze Ameen | Director Knowledge Management

A focal group discussion session was conducted with the women who had been beneficiaries of the kitchen gardening initiative that had become ongoing with this project.

The women provided perspectives of how they adapted their small corners into a fruitful infrastructure allowing them towards subtantially provide their children with sufficient nutritional requirements whereby they could be able to sustainably maintain food security for their families.

Children also provided feedback in how the experience provided them an activity that was meaningful, educational, and was able to guide them towards reasonably achieve happiness in seeing something that they had grown, was indeed, something which had been what they had put effort to maintain, and then finally, they would collect it and then consume in a dish.

"Having a garden is nice. We have birds and flowers and I learned how to grow onions, potatos... I learned how to properly place them inside the ground, how to prevent pests and birds from harming the crop, and even when to take them out. I really liked it, and I have become really good at it." (Respondent, 10 year old)

The focal group discussion also highlighted the importance of how kitchen gardening can be made sustainable as well as feasible for the utilization of work that benefits the women and children of the area. This also means that they can not only provide for themselves, some who have reasonably larger gardens can form their own sustainable livleihoods based on that garden produce.

I have a portion of my house where I am unable to build anything, and thorugh this project I was able to establish a small garden where I grow ginger. I am able to supply the needs of ginger for my neighbors in this gali, and still have enough left over that I can use for myself as well. It is fresh, organic, and it is able to provide me significant savings as a result of the work at hand

This also correlates with how the project is made feasible because of the contributions of GlobalGiving towards NHSD projects. To that end, NHSD is grateful to our patrons and donors for their benevolence and their constant support of our causes. We hope that with this investment we are able to achieve substantial feasibility in our endeavors. And we hope that we can furthermore, sustainably maintain a reasonable framework for utilization.
