The Green Mountain Conservancy established its Land Conservation Fund in anticipation of purchasing and conserving in perpetuity key wildlife corridors in Southern Vermont. These corridors provide clear passage for flora and fauna from the Green Mountain National Forest to the White Mountains, from the smallest mycorrhizal fungi, to our beloved pollinators and many species of birds, to our large mammals like porcupine, beavers, coyotes, bobcats, moose and bear, all species that depend on these corridors to insure their survival. This survival is threatened by overdevelopment that inhibits passage across the landscape. Even mowed lawns and paved parking lots can threaten species survival.
The importance and immediacy of the work of the Green Mountain Conservancy has never been more apparent. Monster storms, massive forest fires, melting glaciers, mass extinctions and increased land fragmentation all threaten the future. As part of the world-wide network of people working to reverse this trend and ‘save the planet’, GMC continues to be even more committed to the critical conservation work it is doing in Southern Vermont. GMC Board Members and volunteers are currently exploring and assessing several large forested and wilderness parcels to determine their conservation value and, when appropriate, explore ways these properties, can be protected forever. In doing this work, GMC works closely with other key conservation organizations like The Nature Conservancy, the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board, and the Vermont Land Trust.
GMC has an impressive track record for doing this work. Since 2019, it has purchased and conserved 913 acres of forest and early successional habitat in southern Vermont, the Deer Run Nature Preserve, to:
Meandering woodland trails, accessible to people of all ages, make the Preserve a popular site for environmental education and relaxing in nature.
Funds raised for the Land Conservation Fund at this time will pay for appraisals and other upfront work needed in anticipation of acquisition and conservation.
