GMC Continues Conservation of Critical Southern VT Lands

By Mary Ellen Copeland | President, Green Mountain 'Conservancy

The Green Mountain Conservancy is continuing to acquire and conserve important forest blocks and wildlife corridors in southern Vermont.  Last fall it added 115 acres in northeastern Dummerston to its land holdings, the Canoe Brook Nature Preserve.  This Preserve, a long abandoned farm now grown up to forest, has ancient white oaks that likely provided shelter for farm animals in the 1700's and 1800's.  More recently the Conservancy added 30 precious acres to the 954 acre Deer Run Nature Preserve-a connecting parcel that provides shelter to creatures moving across the lanscape to meet the challenges of climate change.

The Conservancy is now working to acquire and conserve the Old Oaks Headwaters Preserve, 197 acres of forest in Marlboro, VT.  This property is the headwaters of the iconic Green River and its protection is critical to the water supply for regions to the south. The Preserve is home to a wide diversity of species.  There are multiple beaver wetlands inhabited by beaver families that have been intensively studied by local naturalists and ledges that are have been home to  porcupine families for generations.  Trail camera footage monitors the activities of the bears, moose and deer that live here or pass through on their way to the Green Mountains or the Connecticut River.  Marlboro residents and visitors from around the world have enjoyed  hiking and skiing on the town trail and other trails in this Preserve.

GMC is currently working with a landowner who is donating 111 acres of land to the Conservancy, is working with several landowners to insure permanent conservation of their lands and is beginning to work on several other acquisition projects.

The Conservancy continues to work to acquire and conserve even more land in southern Vermont to insure that southern Vermont remains a haven for wildlife and a special place for people to live and visit while protecting the region's biodiversity into the future.
