The worsening smog crisis across Pakistan in 2026 has become a stark reminder that the climate emergency is not a distant threat it is a daily reality. Cities such as Lahore and other urban centers in Punjab have witnessed hazardous air quality levels, disrupting schools, limiting outdoor activity, and placing serious health burdens on communities. For young people, prolonged exposure to polluted air has meant not only physical risks but also interruptions to education, reduced mobility, and growing anxiety about the kind of environment they are inheriting.
This environmental challenge highlights a critical gap in climate governance and urban planning. Air pollution is not merely an environmental issue; it is a public health, economic, and intergenerational justice issue. Young Pakistanis are increasingly aware that sustainable transport systems, stronger emissions regulation, regional cooperation, and accountable policy implementation are essential to addressing recurring smog episodes. However, awareness must be matched with structured opportunities for engagement and leadership. In this context, the Green Ambassadors project has continued to prioritize youth-focused climate dialogue and advocacy. Over recent months, we have used digital platforms to share accessible information on air quality, responsible environmental practices, and the policy dimensions of urban pollution. We have amplified youth voices calling for cleaner cities and encouraged informed civic participation around environmental decision-making. While full-scale on-ground programming is still pending due to funding constraints, this phase has enabled us to consolidate a network of motivated young individuals who are ready to transition from awareness to action. The interest and urgency are evident what remains is the support required to channel this momentum into structured training, community engagement initiatives, and youth-led environmental campaigns. The smog crisis underscores a simple reality: environmental resilience cannot be postponed. With strengthened partnerships and resources, Green Ambassadors aims to equip young people with the knowledge, advocacy skills, and platforms needed to push for sustainable urban solutions and climate-responsive governance.
We remain committed to advancing youth-led environmental leadership in Pakistan. Your continued support brings us closer to transforming concern into coordinated action and ensuring that the next generation is empowered not just to endure environmental challenges but to lead the change toward cleaner, healthier cities.
Thank you for standing with us.
Warm regards,
Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development And Transparency – PILDAT
