With 68% of its 250 million people under 30, Pakistan has a young population, yet youth aged 18-29 are often sidelined in climate action. The devastating 2022 floods impacted over 33 million lives, highlighting the urgency of their involvement. PILDAT's Green Ambassadors project aims to empower 100 young leaders with climate action skills, aligning with the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 13, to build a generation of eco-conscious leaders for a resilient Pakistan.
According to Global Climate Risk Index, Pakistan is ranked as the 5th most vulnerable country to climate change. Each year, floods in Pakistan displace millions, destroy infrastructure, and claim lives, with the 2022 floods alone causing an estimated $30 billion in damages. Young people in Pakistan are often left out of climate change awareness and climate-related decision-making processes, missing out on opportunities to address the crises they are directly experiencing.
Involving young people in climate action can unlock their potential to drive grassroots initiatives and support sustainable policies, helping to mitigate immediate climate impacts while preparing future leaders. PILDAT's Green Ambassadors project will train 100 youth from disaster-prone regions through 5 workshops focused on advocacy, local solutions, and environmental awareness. These sessions will teach disaster preparedness, climate justice, reforestation, and community engagement.
Empowering youth leadership will create a resilient and sustainable future for Pakistan. Trained youth leaders will drive climate action, influence policy reforms, and inspire others. Expected outcomes include improved resilience to climate disasters and a generation of eco-conscious leaders. The Green Ambassadors project aims to expand its reach to more disaster-prone areas across Pakistan in future phases. To foster networking, a WhatsApp group and a webpage will showcase Ambassadors' profiles
