Green Again: Reforesting Syria's Lands

By Alaa Aldeen Arhemo | Programs Manager

Our foundation is deeply committed to restoring Syria’s landscapes and empowering communities through our campaign “Green Again: Reforesting Syria’s Lands.” The purpose of this initiative is to plant trees in deforested and war-affected areas of Syria, to revitalize ecosystems, reduce erosion, enhance local livelihoods, and restore hope for future generations.

To date, we have raised a total of $644. While we are grateful for every contribution, this amount is unfortunately far below the level required to implement the vital interventions we envisioned. The scale of need is large: many areas in Syria have lost their tree cover due to conflict, neglect and climate pressures. Without sufficient resources, we cannot begin the re-planting, soil rehabilitation, training of local workers, or the long-term monitoring and maintenance of tree projects.

Our planned activities included: purchasing tree seedlings of native species, preparing the soil in selected sites, engaging local youth and women’s groups in planting campaigns, providing trees and tools to communities, establishing irrigation systems where necessary, and organizing awareness sessions on sustainable forest management. We also intended to monitor survival rates of trees, provide maintenance and replacement of failed saplings, and link the reforestation work with livelihood opportunities — such as fruit-tree production, community orchards, and eco-tourism prospects. However, the funding gathered so far falls short of enabling even one of these components at a meaningful scale.

At this stage, the entire collected sum is kept securely and transparently in our project account, awaiting further support until we can commit to full implementation in line with our standards of accountability and effectiveness. We reaffirm our commitment to full transparency: all donor funds will be tracked and reported, and updates will be provided on tree-planting progress, survival rates, location, and community impact.

We now extend a sincere call to our friends, supporters, and new donors around the world: the communities and ecosystems of Syria need your support now more than ever. A small gift goes a long way: for example, $25 can buy and plant 10 native tree seedlings; $50 can provide tools and training for local youth groups; $100 can help establish the irrigation or watering system for a young orchard; and $250 can fund a small community-led reforestation plot and monitoring program.

Your generosity can transform barren lands into thriving green spaces, give children safe places to play under shade trees, restore soil fertility for farmers, enhance local air quality, and build resilience against future shocks. By investing in this reforestation campaign, you are investing in the future of Syria’s landscapes and her people.

On behalf of the entire team at our foundation, we extend our heartfelt thanks to those who have already donated and supported this mission. Your solidarity is the seed of change. Let us not stop here — together, we can still make a significant difference. Please consider increasing your donation, sharing this campaign widely within your networks, and encouraging others to stand with us in restoring Syria’s green heritage.

Thank you for your support and belief in our work.
