High technology to low-income children in Brazil

After 20 years of existence, GRAACC prepares for a new stage. In 2012, along with the first moment of expansion, the service will be available for children's high-tech radiation therapy for children from all over Brazil and Latin America.

The new radiotherapy occupies an area of approximately 600m²and has an investment of approximately US$ 4,4 million (US$ 2,9 million of equipment + US$ 1,5 million for the construction of the bunker). Is one of the only hospitals in Brazil to provide this equipment to low-income children, which now represents 90% of our service.

Today in Brazil there are about 11,000 new cases of cancer each year and over time, GRAACC became a major referral center for research, professional education and treatment of childhood cancer, especially the more complex cases. Today we reached 84% of service capacity and from being forced to expand their hospital.

The Hospital has GRAACC cure rate of childhood cancer similar to those observed in developed countries, about 70%. The technology used in the hospital ensures the reduction of late side effects and helps to heal with better quality of life.

GRAACC performs transplants from umbilical cord brought the U.S.

A new life after transplant

At 8 years old, Gustavo Gomes Pepi, patient GRAACC´s Hospital, faced a new step in the treatment of leukemia, he performed for over two years: the need for a bone marrow transplant. No compatible donor marrow banks in Brazil, the option was to seek in another country. The raw material came from St. Louis University in Missouri, USA. "We do not measure much less work and cost of saving lives", says Prof. Dr. Sergio Petrilli - medical superintendent of the Pediatric Oncology Institute (IOP). Hospital GRAACC which operates in partnership, technical and scientific, with the UNIFESP.

The patient was entered by GRAACC the National Registry of Bone Marrow Recipients (REREME), controlled by the National Cancer Institute (INCA), which seeks donors in national and international banks. "The transplant was successful. Pepi is currently the only hospital for hydration and medications", says Dr. Flavio Zecchin - pediatric oncologist GRAACC.

This was another successful experience of the hospital, fighting one of the most common types of tumors among children. To perform the procedures, the hospital has GRAACC Laboratory Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), which stores the harvested marrow donor before being received by patients.

The marrow donation is a simple process and realized voluntarily. After sign up on the National Register of Bone Marrow Donors, check the compatibility of the volunteer with patients waiting for bone marrow. If it is compatible, undergoes a procedure a collecting bone marrow, and was discharged the same day. The patient, receive the bone marrow along with the serum and the medicament intravenously. "It's very important that people know it´s simple to donate bone marrow and can save many lives", says Dr. Valeria Cortez Ginan, Medical Laboratory GRAACC BMT.
