Research and treatment of child cancer in Brazil

In Brazil, GRAACC is reference in the treatment and research of childhood cancer. There are 11,000 new cases/year and the second cause of death in the country. Thus, we get children across Latin America in search of healing results, which represents 70% in GRAACC. Rate close to the Americans and the Europeans.

The most aggravating, Brazil, in early diagnosis of this disease. In GRAACC 80% of the patients considered high complexity.

Since 2010, GRAACC is expanding its structures. The first phase of the project will be delivered in the second half of 2012, making thew hospital in 4,100m² double the size and reaching 8,400m². This was a necessary step, because we were in 84% of service capacity, and went so far as to refuse treatment for some children due to lack of beds and surgical-center.

The new building will cost R$ 35.000.000 (US$ 19,500,000) including the newest modulated radiation therapy equipment at a cost of R$ 5.000.000 (US$ 2.800.000) which will be available to low-income patients.

This extension will only happen because the community and many companies have come together to achieve this dream.

In the last two years, GRAACC has worked extensively in the expansion of its structures and, therefore, has been expanding its fundraising possibilities in order to meet the maintenance costs of your hospital today.

Within this context, the Global Giving has been very important tool that allows the international mobilization of people and businesses. It is through the GG that everyone can know the work of the organization and, especially, embrace the cause of fighting childhood cancer in Brazil, from anywhere in the world with a single click.

More than 20 years of dedication to the healing of children and adolescents with cancer in Brazil. This work is only possible thanks to the involvement of a large number of people, who along GRAACC, want to face major challenges.

In 2011, a great example is the case of Hewlett Packard, as well as encouraging their employees to volunteer, give them a return in dollars, in exchange for this work, so they choose to allocate GG institutions in the value given by the company. To GRAACC in 2011 were 46 employees who helped us through the giftcard, a value close to raising $ 4,000 dollars. The unit HP Brazil also donated about $ 26,000 to build the new hospital GRAACC.

This was a great example and a great result for GRAACC through GlobalGiving in 2011.
