CHALLENGES – CHALLENGES – CHALLENGES
Gordon Clem Academy opened in February of 2015. The area is targeted as an area of great need. The closest public high school is 22 kilometers away. The road is technically non-existent with no bridge over the often swelling river, poverty that allows children to sleep hungry, no water from the public well, and much more insecurity than was first considered. The small village empties after the scouts see an approaching tribe. The insecurity begins with someone needing cows for a marriage dowry, the quickest way to marriage is to get some friends and steal some cows from the neighboring tribe, then in retaliation the tribe gathers and heads off to steal back. This “game” is centuries old. There is a dreaded difference now. Instead of spears and knives, cunning and stealth, there are assault weapons. The village residents are reluctant to return to their homes after a raid, death is common; women and children are not exempt from a rain of bullets. This wreaks havoc on a school schedule and creates educational instability – a problem with a severe impact.
Peace will not come to these tribes until education is firmly in place. The need of conflict resolution skills and logistical understanding of disruption and development will only come through an educated literate population. Secondary school and adult education are the tools.
You can help us meet these challenges.
