On January 12, 2019, when the world celebrated Youth Day, Goonj’s Chattisgarh team got together with adolescent girls and women of Bagar village for various sports activities and a talk on menstruation.
It all started almost a year ago, when, while working here, the Goonj team noticed women’s reluctance in talking about their menstrual health. ‘Women and girls had access to market menstrual products but there was a huge culture of shame & silence around this issue.’ says Prahlad, Team Goonj.
At the end of open discussion with 110 local women and girls from this area, about their menstrual challenges and hygiene, 20-year-old Pooja (name changed) said, "Even today, in our village we have to go to the pond to take bath, out in the open. We have to hide and wash our menstrual cloth because there are others at the pond. But now we do not have to feel ashamed about menstruation in front of anyone. Now we will also take care of our personal hygiene in a better way.”
All the women/girls also received Goonj’s menstrual Dignity Packs i.e. Goonj’s cloth sanitary pads.
