Challenge

Between February 2025 to-date, conflict in North Kivu has displaced 980,000 people, adding to over 3 million newly displaced in the DRC in 2024, with 96% in the east. Goma and Bukavu have become critical humanitarian hotspot. Intense fighting, coupled with displacement, has left thousands without basic necessities. Displaced families and host communities are struggling to access food and clean water, with thousands at risk of malnutrition.

Solution

1. Life-Saving Intervention: The vulnerable population have an urgent need for an immediate lifesaving intervention to prevent hunger-related mortality especially for the displaced. 2. Scale of displacement and need: Overburdened Host Families face increased strain as they share limited resources with displaced populations. This is contributing to food insecurity among both groups. 3. Critical Food Insecurity Levels and Food Scarcity: The conflict has disrupted food supply chains and markets.

Long-Term Impact

Goal: To alleviate food insecurity and enhance resilience among 3,280 displaced and host families through emergency food assistance and social cohesion support. By the end of the food relief distribution the activity aims to: 1. Provide immediate relief to 19,680 target individuals an improved food consumption and reduced hunger 2. Strengthening Host Community Resilience: Support host families to cope with the increased burden of hosting displaced and encourage social cohesion.
