Goats for Poor Farming Families in the Philippines

Warm greetings and thank you very much for your generous support to our project providing goats to poor farming families. This reporting period, we promoted to goat raisers the planting of forage crops for the goats. Some of the raisers experienced problem sourcing grasses and sometimes this results to quarrel with neighbors and providing forage crops is an important component when one raises goats. We were able to procure from a commercial source seeds of forage crops with high protein such as indigofera, calliandra, ipil-ipil and centrosema. This will be planted in the boundaries of the farm and every now and then the branches and leaves are cut to be fed to the goats. A total of 52 farmers were provided with seeds and we train them how to raise them in polybags.

We experienced difficulty in sourcing upgraded goats that has the potential in improving the performance of the herd that we are dispersing to farmers. Improvement of goat lines is very important and urgent because native goats produce small offspring and do not produce milk at all. The years of in-breeding has resulted in this phenomenon and there is a need to improve the performance of our goats in order also to improve the benefits that will accrue to farmers. This reporting period we sourced out good upgraded goats and we were able to purchase mixed Saanen breed that is high performer. We will use this goat in order to improve the kids of our females and also improve the general performance of the goat population here.
