By Kimberly Morgan-West | Senior Goal Card Program Coordinator
Since RISE began the Goal Card program in 2003, we have added other extensions, such as the Pennies-a-Day program for 5th graders. The main emphasis of Goal Card is on goal setting and improvement in grades, conduct and attendance.
Goal Card is an incentive-based program, as students earn points for accomplishing their goals, they can either redeem for specific items offered each six-week period or bank points for future redemptions. In addition to program participants outperforming their peers in elementary and middle school, Goal Card high school students last academic school year had a 100% graduation rate with all graduating seniors to date enrolled in post-secondary institutions.
The Pennies-a-Day program was established in 2018 to provide our youngest students with an introduction into banking and to encourage savings at a younger age. We are so pleased to report that our elementary students are finding inventive ways to gather coins within a month’s time and making deposits faithfully.
The first semester deposit totals are in, and our Pennies-a-Day participants are doing a great job rounding up coins to deposit into their piggy banks every month. As of December 2019, LaRose Elementary 5th graders are leading the way with close to $86.00 in coin savings, with two of our highest depositors saving nearly $20 each. Our Cummings Elementary 5th grade group is not far behind with nearly $40.00 in overall savings, and our highest depositor accumulating nearly $10.00 in coins.
RISE wants to congratulate all our Pennies-a-Day participants, along with their teachers and parents for making this program such a success. If you have any questions about this program or would like to volunteer or make a donation to Pennies-a-Day, please contact the RISE Senior Program Coordinator at goalcard@risememphis.org.
