RISE's Goal Card Program kicked off another year, registering over 90 students in during school registration for the 2011-2012 academic year. As of April 2011, there were 356 students enrolled in the program. Funds donated through GlobalGiving provide incentives for youth. Last year, a total of 254 redemptions were made by students who improved their grades, conduct, and attendance in school in exchange for school supplies, toys, and small electronics.
Students enrolled in Goal Card graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, which was selected as the winner of the President's Commencement Race. President Barack Obama was the keynote speaker, and Christopher Dean, a longtime Goal Card participant, introduced him during the ceremony. He credits many of his academic accomplishments and improvement to his mentors, Goal Card coordiantors, Ricco Mitchell and Sameka Johnson. Dean will attend Lane College in Jackson, TN this Fall.
Monies donated to the Goal Card Program through GlobalGiving allows RISE to host the annual Summer Bridge Institute for rising 5th graders who entered the Goal Card Program this academic year. This summer, the six-week camp consisted of daily goal-setting sessions, including pre and post-testing on basic financial literacy principles, free lunches for the participants and field trips, such as a tour of First Tennesee Bank and Regions Bank, and an outing to a nature park.
