Dear GlobeMed family and friends,
Things are in full swing at the University of Rochester already and we’ve been at school for not even two months! We have 17 new members in our organization and we are very excited to continue to educate our staff and GlobeMed supporters that health is a human right. Our new members come from a variety of backgrounds and have very different interests and academic majors. With such a diverse group, we are learning from each other on a daily basis and are truly excited for what is to come.
Our five GROW interns Anisha, Maddy, Humma, Cameron and Rhett worked with our partner in Peru for six weeks during the summer. Now they are back and sharing their stories, which is motivating our chapter like never before. While in Peru, the interns monitored and evaluated many of the programs that we raised money for. By doing this, it helps Kallpa know how the programs are truly benefiting the community. One program that is funded by GlobeMed at UR is ‘El Programa de Prep.' This program offers assistance to students to prepare for the intense technical school or university entrance exam.
The GROW interns also attended the inauguration of a sexual and reproductive health consultory in the cultural center that is now supported by the Regional Board of Health. This new program is now supported by members of the youth group who will act as community health promoters in raising awareness about the services offered to the community
Maddy also judged a contest for which the nine neighborhoods were able to develop the best plans and actions towards promoting cleanliness and health in their own communities, culminating in an ExpoFair at which all the participating neighborhoods also displayed their handmade recycled arts and crafts such as dolls and paper-mache masks.
This school year GlobeMed at UR has made a commitment to Kallpa Iquitos to raise at least $12,000 dollars and we will need your help! We will be fundraising throughout the year and hope you keep GlobeMed in mind when you are feeling extra generous. We are extremely grateful for your continuous support and encouragement. We recently created a new website, so please check it out - urglobemed.tumblr.com. At this site you can find more information about GlobeMed and our campaigns for the upcoming semesters. Our next event is a 5k, co-sponsored with Community Place and the TLW group, for children and adults to promote healthy lifestyles.
In solidarity,
GlobeMed at the University of Rochester
