Today I want to share with you the journey of another amazing young man we have supported through your generosity. Meet David*:
David was admitted at the Likoni Rehabilitation School on 14th October 2013 due to behavioural issues. At first he struggled to settle into life at the Rehabilitation School and was frustrated about the turn his life had taken. However, he engaged in football coaching and 1:1 sessions with Glad’s House Staff and attended class with Teachers at the School. Slowly David began to calm down and his academic performance began to improve. Despite all the progress David was making in his behaviour and academic performance, his family were not willing to have him home.
After two year he was due for release and David pleaded with the Manager to allow him to remain for two more years so he could sit his Primary School exam, the exam that determines whether you move onto Secondary School or finish your education. But David was forced to leave, knew he couldn't go home so he decided to go to the streets of Mombasa.
David remained on the Streets for one month when he asked other homeless young people about Glad’s House, who he knew of from our work in the Juvenile Justice System.
David came to our Drop In Programme, Papasa - he carried all his documents in an envelope so he could share his situation with our Social Workers. He wanted us to support him to continue with his education within Mombasa and not to take him home where he knew he would be rejected.
David moved into the Glad’s House Boys Programme (https://www.globalgiving.co.uk/projects/support-30-young-people-off-the-streets-of-mombasa/) on 22nd February 2016. Our plan was to enrol David in a local school so he could continue with education whilst in the long term, we work to rebuild his relationship with his family. Sadly, no school would take David as they perceived him as 'bad' due to his time spent in the Rehabilitation School. At Glad's House we don't let barriers stand in our way, and so we have registered David as a private candidate for his Primary School exam. Our Teachers are working with him to get him ready for his exams. Our Social Workers are liaising with his family - slowly rebuilding that relationship.
David would have never known about Glad's House without YOUR support enabling us to work in the Juvenile Rehabilitation School, his journey to education and a bright future is all down to your generosity
