Glad's House will be supporting street children who are arrested and/or detained in Mombasa and other children and young people who are imprisoned in Mombasa. We are working to improve living conditions for them. We will be delivering care packages, sport sessions as well as supporting children back home on release. We are also working with police and institutions to improve conditions in the long term ensure that each individual childs rights are realised
There are more than 250 children incarcerated in Mombasa at any one time, often for petty offences or made up charges. Most have not had access to legal representation. Glad's House Advocacy Programme is working to change this. Alongside working with stakeholders in the criminal justice system such as police, prisons and law makers to lobby for change, we are also working within institutions to ensure that children and young peoples basic needs are met and rights are realised.
This project will ensure that children and young people's basic needs are met through providing care packages and are all able to play and have fun! We will ensure children at the end of their sentences will be supported to return home which are often hundreds of miles from the Institution. We will ensure children are not being released into the city centre with no way of returning to their family. Glad's House will be able to reduce the number of children going from Institutions to the street.
By working inside institutions we are able to collect data around the situations of the children and young people as well as the lack of resources provided for them. Over the year of this project Glad's House will be collecting data and case studies in order to present a report to government. We hope this will lead to working together with the Kenyan Government to make lasting change for children and young people in the criminal justice system.
