Dear friends,
Thank you for your continuing support for the Kaliyachak Girls School in rural Bihar, India. With your support, the school has been able to enhance its educational program since reopening last September after the lockdown.
For our students who share household responsibilities with their parents, school is an escape and the chance to just be children. School activities include time to jump rope, play games, draw and sing. The girls’ school reopened at full strength on the first of September, a relief for these children.
We've added gur-mungaphali (peanuts and jaggery) as a daily, mid-morning snack to supplement the girls' nutrition. The flavorful combination helps to increase hemoglobin and protect against anemia. In December, we provided red and blue hoodies to protect against the winter's chill and make for a more comfortable learning experience.
With only 53% female literacy in the state of Bihar, the Kaliyachak Girls School aims to address education in an intersectional manner, focusing on those girls that face the most significant prejudice and marginalization. The girls' school currently educates 88 girls from class I to VI from Kaliyachak and seven neighbouring villages. Our aim is to add a grade each year until we support classes I to XII and reach an estimated 400 out-of-school girls in the area. Giving every girl the opportunity to take control of her future is the goal. We aim to ensure that these girls gain literacy, confidence and improved health to overcome the social and cultural barriers they face.
With your help, we can reach our goal of educating 400 girls between 6 and 14 years old. An educated girl marries later, has fewer children, has healthier children and earns more income during her lifetime. Her education improves the quality of life of her family and her community.
Your support changes everything. Please continue to support a better future for the students of Kaliyachak Girls School.
Thank you for your generous support,
Susan Abraham
