Give the Gift of a Safe Birth with Ultrasound

Project Report | Oct 1, 2026
Closer to Home, Closer to Safety.

By Herbert Onen | Programs manager

Thanks to your generosity, our clinics have now performed more than 100 ultrasound scans since the portable machine arrived. For many of these women, it was the first time they could see how their baby was growing. Scans are now part of routine antenatal care, helping our team confirm pregnancies, monitor fetal growth, and plan safer deliveries. The machine has also let us respond to emergencies with immediate imaging, so urgent concerns can be assessed quickly when time matters most.

The difference shows in the stories we hear. One expectant mother,  told our team how relieved she was to have her scan close to home. Before, an ultrasound meant travelling into town, paying for transport, and enduring humps and bumpy roads while heavily pregnant. This time she was spared both the cost and the discomfort. Her experience reflects what many women in our communities face, and each scan close to home removes one more barrier to early care.

Our work has also taught us what to improve. Qualified sonographers are costly to retain, which limits the number of scanning days we can offer. We are working to train our midwives in point-of-care sonography so that scans can happen wherever women already receive care. Demand has been especially high at outreaches and medical camps, where a single machine cannot serve everyone who comes.

Looking ahead, we plan to train more midwives and to reach more women at outreaches, including those in outlying communities. Because of your support, early detection is becoming part of everyday maternal care in our region, and mothers like the one above are safer for it. Thank you for being part of this.
