The Learning Center Impacts Lives

By Caryn Maxim | Executive Director, Grupo Cajola in North America

The Learning Center works with First Graders, but also with all of the other grade levels of primary school. In addition, they accept special needs students that are recommended by the public school system.

For this report, we would like to highlight the impact the Learning Center has had on families. The teachers initiated parent-teacher meetings to be able to help the parents understand where their children were on their learning journey. The result was extremely positive, with the additional unexpected benefit that the teachers learned more about the parents -- nearly half of them illiterate -- and the parents learned about education, why the program is based on learning through play, and what they as parents can do to support their children's education. Another unexpected benefit was the improved attendance by the children!

We have reported before on the Reading Program. To update you, this program continues, with 25 minute reading beginning each day's session. We will be reporting on progress later in the school year (which ends in November). However, it is clear that the children do reach a level of comprehension and speed where they begin to look forward to their reading time!

Please continue to support this program. It operates 5 days each week for 2 hours each day during 11 months of the year. And the children are the best supporters, claiming that they have learned alot and especially like learning through having fun.

Thank you

Caryn
