Project Report | Mar 17, 2025
The children are getting the tools to succeed!

By Caryn Maxim | Director

Thanks to your support, the Learning Center Afterschool program started up with the beginning of the 2025 school year. Parents eagerly enrolled their children and participated in an orientation -- actively participated -- to understand what the program and what their children's education is all about.

As the children begin the program, the teachers evaluate them to identify their individual strengths and weakness and make their plan as to how to address the weaknesses and take advantage of the strengths during the course of the year. Daily classes are balanced between any remedial work the student might need and enrichment activities where they are exposed to theater, puppets, science experiments, activities to stimulate their creativity and enhance their self esteem. Each month all the classes focus on one of the important values of the Maya culture such as generosity, love, love of nature.

The Learning Center uses considerable experiential learning activites as well as various learning techniques to help children who have different styles of learning.

At the same time the children are learning, the teachers are learning too. The Guatemala public school system along with the secondary teacher training system are quite deficient in offering a robust education. The Learning Center teachers dedicate time to learning new techniques from various professionals who contribute their time.

Thank you for your support! Hopefully this small report will give you confidence that you are helping us make a difference.
