Make Me Smile-Kenya continued its work with children and adolescents living with HIV during the second quarter of 2026, focusing on treatment adherence, mental wellness, and educational support. The reporting period saw a series of interventions designed to address the medical, psychosocial, and developmental needs of this vulnerable population, ensuring they receive comprehensive care that goes beyond clinical treatment. Through Operation Triple Zero sessions, mental health awareness initiatives, and targeted educational support, the project remained committed to improving health outcomes, building resilience, and creating pathways to a brighter future for these young people.
Operation Triple Zero (OTZ) Sessions
This quarter, we held three OTZ sessions that reached a total of 116 children and adolescents living with HIV. We gathered at Katito Sub-County Hospital on 23rd April with 50 young people, and later in June at Rae and Chiga Health Centres, where we connected with 36 and 30 participants respectively.
At the centre of these sessions were the three OTZ pillars - zero missed doses, zero missed appointments, and zero unsuppressed viral load. But beyond the medical goals, we created space for honest conversations. The young people opened up about the real struggles they face: the fear of being seen taking medication, the weight of stigma, and the loneliness that sometimes comes with their status. Together, we tackled common myths about HIV and shared practical tips like setting phone reminders and leaning on trusted friends to stay on track. To keep things lively and engaging, we brought in football-based activities that taught life skills in a fun, natural way. They left asking for more sessions like these, which told us we were on the right track.
Mental Health and Emotional Well-being
Since June is Mental Health Awareness Month, we made it a priority to talk about what truly matters beyond the clinic. We sat together and had honest conversations about the emotional weight these young people carry - stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and the constant fear of being "found out." One moment that really stayed with us was when an adolescent shared their fear of taking medication in boarding school, worried that other students might discover their status. In that safe space, facilitators and fellow peers stepped in with kindness and practical advice how to find a trusted teacher, ways to keep medication private, and the importance of staying committed to treatment no matter what.
Educational and Career Development Support
During the report period, we took measurements for 15 school-going beneficiaries who will receive new school uniforms. This was prompted by our observation that several learners were attending school in worn-out or ill-fitting uniforms, while their caregivers lacked the financial capacity to replace them. Providing new uniforms aims to uphold the dignity and self-esteem of these children, promote regular school attendance, and create a more supportive learning environment.
Conclusion
This work goes beyond medical care to address the holistic needs of children and adolescents living with HIV. By integrating treatment adherence support, mental wellness, and educational interventions, we are equipping these young people with the tools they need to lead healthy, dignified, and independent lives. The programme reaffirms that HIV does not define their potential, and through continued support, they have a genuine opportunity to thrive.
