THE TIME IS NOW

Representing at the Day of the African Child
Representing at the Day of the African Child

Special greetings from Children at Kathy’s kindergarten. I guess it gives you numerous joy to know that a child in Mayuge is enjoying early years learning because of your generosity.

On 11th July, our children joined Mayuge District to commemorate the International Day of the African Child. The theme of this year was, “Education for all children in Africa, the time is now.”

At Kathy’s kindergarten, it gives us so much pleasure that we are contributing to the future of the African child in Mayuge through providing quality early years’ education. This has been possible because of your support.

English is not the first language spoken in Mayuge, but the ability of 3–6year olds to speak English amazes both their parents, community members. At the DAC commemoration, one couldn’t help but hear different people ask, “which school do those kids speaking English go to?” A parent who attended the event appreciated that the kids are lively and confident which is not common amongst kids of their age in this community.

The kindergarten has a total population of 66 pupils with 26 in baby class (3-4) years, 19 in middle class (4-5) years and 21 in top class (5-6) years. Transformation of children happens at Kathy’s kindergarten. We have children who have progressed socially, emotionally while with us.

One of them is Amal (5 years old) who joined school when his social life was totally disconnected. The only person he was used to was his dad. He did not want any interaction with teachers, his friends, and often sat alone, at times hiding in the toilet. The love he continuously received from teachers helped him cope with the environment both socially and emotionally, helping him catch up with academics. He is now one of the most caring pupils, having concern for his fellow friends, reporting any challenges encountered by his friends.

Teachers’ capacity to deliver quality enhanced.

The teachers attended a training session organized by AJIBU Community which focused on how to engage children in creative learning with loose materials/learning resources that is fun filled, basically encouraging child centred learning and learning through play. It was fulfilling as they got to appreciate that learning through play aids the cognitive and physical development of a child and makes both teaching and learning fun for everyone involved. We can say this was integrated within our usual learning, assigning a Friday for kids to have extended learning through play.

The teachers also attended a training organized by SIPRO, a company providing expertise consultancy in education services. They were refreshed on the best ways to teach children reading and writing using jolly phonics, enabling them to be more efficient in their delivery.

Kathy’s kindergarten is not only a centre for providing quality early years education, but also paying attention to the social and emotional needs of our children. A child who goes through Kathys has an opportunity to thrive in primary because of the strong foundation.

We are grateful that in the heart of Mayuge, Kathy’s kindergarten is such a landmark! Thank you so much for being a part of a child’s early years.
