Did you know that we celebrate International Day of the Child in Uganda too? Guess what! Kathy’s kindergarten children participated this year in the annual Event, and It was their joy to be part of it. The International Day of the African Child is celebrated annually on the 16th of June. This event honors the memories of children who were massacred in Soweto in 1976 for protesting against education injustice and inequality in the apartheid regime. This resulted in the deaths of hundreds of students and is considered a turning point in the struggle against apartheid.

Commemorating the Day of the African Child (DAC) is an opportunity to celebrate the realization of the rights of the African child in line with the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of Children, and to raise awareness of the challenges that children face.

One of the most pressing challenges facing the African Child today is a lack of access to quality education. We are proud that through your support, Kathy’s kindergarten is bridging the education gap in Mayuge. As Kathy’s kindergarten, we are aware of the importance of this day, which is why we fully participated in the event.

While observing the 2023 International Day of the African Child under the Theme `` PROMOTING AND PROTECTING THE CHILDRENS’ RIGHTS IN THE DIGITAL ERA”, we were encouraged to put in place or amend laws to protect the rights of children in the digital space, especially on social media.

The children matched to the live band, which was led by Mwezi Primary School, Mpungwe Sub County in Mayuge District and later danced to the cultural dances organized by the Mayuge Local Government in conjunction with the civil society organizations. Allowing our children to  participate made them feel loved and cared for as they had fun, yet learnt so much.

Their parents felt that we are not only giving them quality education but also giving them the right to participation, as the UNCRC states. Their hearts were full of gratitude to have a school like Kathy’s kindergarten in their midst.

While at the event, the people near Kathy’s kindergarten tent were mesmerized to see the children express themselves in English language, and signing the attendance sheet by themselves without the help of a teacher which is evidence of the quality offered at Kathy’s. This is not common amongst their age mates in other schools around Mayuge. For instance, the organizers asked, Which school is this where kids  speak English?”

Today we are proud to say that through your generosity, Kathy’s kindergaten is doing its best to provide quality education to children from 3-6 years of age, and the results speak volumes. We are Proud to be part of this journey, and we believe you too are.

Thank you so much for your continuous support to the journey of bright minds, brighter futures.
