Literacy is a gateway to the world. However, deaf children make up an illiterate and excluded population because there are no materials for them to learn how to to read and write. To prevent school desertion and to match their opportunities to access culture, we will elaborate a textbook for deaf children to become literate.
There are 95,000 hearing impaired children and young people under 20 years of age in Argentina. 95% come from hearing families that do not know sign language. Since childhood this population is excluded from shared conversations, stories or jokes. When they enter school, the language of these children is rudimentary and distorted. Without a first language they do not access written Spanish as a second language. As a result, 80% of students graduate with an excessive high illiteracy rate.
A Spanish textbook for deaf children will be developed, accompanied by videos with activities in Argentine Sign Language. For the first time, deaf schools will have a book that will include a section with orientations for teachers and another with activities for students. Additionally, thematic units of the manual will be related to scientific content. In this way, deaf children will not only learn to read and write in Spanish but will do so through interesting proposals.
100 copies of the textbook will be distributed throughout deaf schools in Argentina, which will benefit 5000 deaf students per year. 400 teachers of the deaf will enrich their strategies for the teaching of communicative and scientific contents with graphic and technological materials. The material will be the basis for promoting the development of more accessible materials for literacy. Families will be able to accompany the teaching processes in their homes.
