Summary

The Hong Kong Association for Cleft Lip and Palate (HKACLP) is the one and only in Hong Kong that provide support services for patients with cleft lip and palate and their parents, as well as pregnant mothers bearing affected babies. HKACLP aims to help the parents to give the best care to the affected children. We do not have subvention of any kind, our fund mainly comes from fund raising activities and donations by the general public.

Challenge

Cleft lip and palate is a kind of common congenital deformity and the most curable one. There are 100 infants with cleft lip and cleft palate every year in Hong Kong. The treatment for cleft lip and palate can be a long period of time and requires a number of surgical procedures. Thus, parents may feel very anxious and helpless when they take care their children with cleft lip and palate.

Solution

The Hong Kong Association for Cleft Lip and Palate reaches over 1100 patient families and provides them a wide range of services that are designed specifically, including Hospital and Home Visits, Feeding Training, Newborn Patients' Parent Group, Medical Seminars, Sharing Sessions, Nasal Splint Follow-up Service, Speech Therapy Service, and Cleft Lip & Palate Treatment Project...... Those services fit different patients' needs and alleviate parents' concerns.

Long-Term Impact

Orofacial clefts place a patient at a disadvantage. They have many challenges to encounter during the growth such as various surgeries, speech & ENT problems, secondary cleft lip & palate deformities...... With the love and effort from their parents as well as the support from HKACLP, the patients may overcome the difficulties and grow into confident and capable member of the society.
