We empower teenage refugees from Cameroon through our skill acquisition program in the Leni Keller workshop in Uyo, Nigeria. After acquiring skills in tailoring, hairbraiding or craft training in modern and traditional accessories, we support the trainees earn a a living through using the machines in our space or support them find employment in the local market. We also offer psycho-social support for the 50 refugees to recover from the traumatic expereinces made during war.
Most refugees find themselves in the Nigeria society in a vulnerable state. Many are out of school and don't have access to training possiblilities. They hardly find a means to earn a livelihood because of the high unemployment rate in Nigeria and because of lack of the right skills. The refugees also are very unstable after making traumatic experiences during the war.
The project will help them learn new skills but also support them earn a living after the training. This will be achieved through providing a shared space with neccessary equipments to earn an income. We also intend to support them find markets for their products and will help empower them by providing machines if they will not want to use the shared space. We offer additional lessons on business and litracy skills, and psycho-social support through our partners psychology beyond barriers.
The training will help refugees earn a living thus fighting poverty.Being employed will reduce the possiblity of them getting involved into criminality or reduce the risk of wanting to leave the continent through one of the dangerous means like crossing the sahara. The program we offer also provide basic reading and writing skills to reduce illitracy. The psycho-social support helps in taking care of their mental health thus helping to stabilize them and impacting their community positively.
