The Powering Villages project will bring life-enhancing energy solutions to 60,000 people in 20 of the poorest villages in Kenya and Tanzania. We will provide solar lighting and clean cooking solutions to households; reliable electricity and cold storage to schools and health clinics; and solar-powered water pumps for safe drinking water and crop irrigation. We will train local entrepreneurs - especially women - to run profitable energy-enabled businesses that can grow and create jobs.
In rural Africa, many families still light their homes with kerosene or candles, as their kitchens fill up with smoke from open fires. No power means no lights or computers in schools; no life-saving equipment or refrigerators for medicines in health clinics. Businesses cannot operate at full capacity and crops fail when there is a drought. These challenges have a profound impact on the lives and livelihoods of rural populations, limiting opportunities and trapping people in a cycle of poverty.
With your support we will help 20 of the poorest villages in Kenya and Tanzania enjoy modern, cleaner forms of energy - not through handouts but by enabling families, schools & clinics, farmers & businesses to afford them. Your donation will help them meet the initial upfront costs, access cheaper working capital and create subsidies for the most vulnerable people. Clean, efficient technologies will slash the cost of energy and release resources for productive investments, health and education.
Clean energy supports better livelihoods, schooling and improved food security. It is essential to deliver modern health services. It increases resilience to climate change and reduces carbon emissions and deforestation. It enables people to fulfil their potential, build better futures and put an end to the cycle of poverty. To ensure these benefits are delivered over the long term, we build the skills of community members to sustain the performance of products and realise their impact.
