In a tragic incident, a 2 year old child Pinku (not his real name) of a poverty stricken family was sold to another person of the slum. When the incident came to the knowledge of the “Balika Mandol” (Girls’ Club organized by us in each slum), the members of the Mandol conducted a meeting and decided to intervene into the matter. They investigated the matter and learnt that the child belong to a broken family. His father is an alcoholic person and lives separately from his wife and child. Mother works as a daily labour as well as found to be involved in prostitution. The child in question is the only child of the family but he was creating hindrance in the free movement of the mother. So mother decided to sell the child. Sp, she sold the child to another person of the slum for five thousand rupees. The buyer family does not have a child.
However selling and buying of a child is punishable under Juvenile Justice Act. Again illegal adoption of a child or adoption without following CARA guidelines is also punishable as it affects the life of the child. Hence Balika Mandol members asked the mother about her child and located the child in the slum. Then they reported to Police. The Police intervened and rescued the child from the house of the buyer. After intervention of the community the child was back to the mother. The mother was warned. The buyer was arrested. The child is happily living with the mother.
Due to timely intervention of our slum “Balika Mandol” (Girls Club), the baby child was rescued and the Balika Mandol is also looking after the child and monitors the movement of the mother.
