Sewing Machines help women become self-sufficient

By John Sparks | President, India Partners

Sewing gives women sustainable incomes
Sewing gives women sustainable incomes

Teaching a woman how to sew is one of the most life-changing things you can do to help a woman living in poverty. Many are uneducated and earn little to no wages. With a valuable skill, these women have an opportunity to provide a good income for themselves and their families

There are 48 women who are currently enrolled in the tailoring schools, and they will spend six months learning how to sew and stitch.

Women like Santhi are grateful for your support. Santhi recently completed her education at a tailoring school, and she’s very happy to have a stable job. Prior to going to school, Santhi experienced a lot of tragedy in her life. She was married and was expecting her first child. However, after a few months of marriage Santhi’s husband felt ashamed to be married to Santhi, who was from a lower caste. He didn’t want the child, so he severely injured Santhi in the stomach, and the baby sadly died in the womb. Devastated and depressed, Santhi was also kicked out of her home and had nowhere to go until a kind married couple took her in.

Santhi was fully dependent on them until she found a way to make a living. She got accepted into the sewing school and after graduating she started working at a tailoring shop for women. Santhi has great attention to detail and the garments she sews are always beautiful. Although she has faced a lot of hardship, Santhi is so grateful for your gracious support. She is happily earning a good income and she enjoys her work.

Thank you for your compassion and generosity in helping women like Santhi.
