In rural Ethiopia, many women live in poverty with limited access to income-generating opportunities. This project empowers 2,000 vulnerable women, especially widows, single mothers, women's with a disability and displaced women, by providing them with female goats, basic veterinary training, and microenterprise support. Goats offer a simple, sustainable livelihood solution. They provide milk, offspring, and income-and can dramatically improve nutrition, self-reliance, and dignity.
Pressing Issue and the Problem Ethiopia's rural women face deep poverty, exclusion from formal employment, and lack of access to financial services. Traditional agriculture often excludes women from land ownership and decision-making. Many live on less than $1 a day. Meanwhile, rural families face: Poor nutrition and limited protein access Dependency on seasonal labor or aid Lack of capital for small business investment Gender-based economic discrimination
How the Project Will Solve the Problem (Our Solution) Over 4 years, this project will: Distribute 2,000 female goats to rural women across 3 regions Provide each woman with training in animal husbandry and marketing Establish 100 women's savings groups for peer support and business growth Set up local veterinary support units and referral networks Facilitate "pass-on-the-gift" systems where offspring goats are given to others Train community facilitators to offer mentorship
Expected Long-Term Impact (By 2030) 2,000 women supported with productive livestock assets 6,000+ additional community members reached via pass-on programs 100 women's saving & support groups formed 80% of women report improved income within 12 months Improved nutrition in 4,000+ rural households Strengthened rural value chains and women's cooperatives Reduced dependence on food aid and harmful coping strategies
