This year, in 2018 we enthusiastically celebrated one more anniversary of creating a unified collective, actually in two locations, Jocotenango, and San Miguel Duneñas.
We held the fourth graduatuion for Grade 6 students. We also held the first graduation for Grade 9 students. We have planned many new and important projects for 2019.
Thank you from Los Patojos in Guatemala to all of our loyal friends all over the world who have made our success possible. We truly appreciate the support, and we promise to continue to work every day to give these children and their families an education complete with love and hope for a better future.
In 12 years we have grown from 3 students to over 400!
We celebrated our 12th anniversary with our students and their families in the Los Patojos way, with art festivals, chess tournaments, music festivals, food and games shared amongst all our children and youth.
Despite tumultuous times in Guatemala, we are persisting and keeping our goal of freeing these children from a life with little hope to one of a future full of possibilities.
We are teaching these children how to find their passion, how to persist at becoming the best they can through hard work and dedication and how to never give up. We can see these traits in our first graduating class of 30 students who will complete their 9th Grade in October, another first for Los Patojos!
Thank you to all our loyal friends all over the world who have made our success possible. We truly appreciate the support and we promise to continue to work every day to give these children and their families an education complete with love and hope for a better future.
The last few months have been difficult with a disastrous eruption from the Fuego volcano, but we are persisting. Los Patojos has accepted new families from the affected areas into our program. They can now be healthy, safe and with our program, create a new future for themselves through education, art and love.
Denery is an example of how change is possible. He came to Los Patojos at 10 years of age. In his own words, he had experienced many familial problems, but the school programs have totally changed his life. He now is happy with his life and environment. As well as studying in Grade 7, Denery found three passions; one is to be part of the bakery team, another is to teach younger children how to bake and the third is photography. Working in the bakery team has provided him with new ways of thinking, new ways of learning how to work in a team which he says has been a beautiful experience. He says some of the most special moments for him are when the bakery team, his fellow students and the teachers share knowledge with each other. These lessons he knows will help him in his future. He wants to finish high school, go to college and eventually attend university.
When we give a child an opportunity to be educated, to think for themselves, to change the future rather than dwell on the past, we give them hope. Denery is on the path to a better future.
Thank you to all the donors who have helped us this last year, Denery and every one of the 390 children appreciate your assistance.
