A family's big change!

By Hassana Shuaibu | Snr. Program Officer

Our learning safe space, set-up in 2019 has been providing out-of-school children in Kware community who have never had access to any form of formal education, access to literacy, numeracy and social skills lessons every weekend for two (2) years following a carefully designed curriculum to aid accelerated learning, and help in their possible transition into formal schools.

Last December we shared the amazing story of Masouda, a girl, who’s playful nature was used as a method to teach her and who wasn’t able to read or write before being taught at the safe space is now able to write all the alphabets, read out letter sounds and recognize numbers. Today we are shining the spotlight on the amazing change the Bakofamily has made by embracing education for their children. None of the Bako family have ever had a Western education, as unfortunately over the years they have seen some schoolchildren exhibit bad behaviours and have always attributed it to the influence of Western education. However, thanks to the interaction of Mr. Bako with Hamzaone of our safe space facilitators; who convinced him to try sending his children to learn highlighting the short learning sessions and non-interference with their normal daily schedules, Mr Bako decided to send only his sons as he still harboured reservationsHis sons started attending the learning sessions and little by little they started reading and writing, and even studying at home, seeing the changes in his sons, he decided to also send his daughter to learn also, laying down the foundation for continued learning in their family.

Seeing children who couldn’t even properly hold a pencil prior to enrolling in our learning safe space now being able to read and write gives us hope that we can truly build a future where every child has access to a learning.

Please keep supporting our work by donating and sharing why you choose to support us with your community of family and friends.

Thank you!
