Our learning safe space, set-up in 2019 has been providing out-of-school children in Kware community who have never had access to any form of formal education, access to literacy, numeracy and social skills lessons every weekend for two (2) years following a carefully designed curriculum to aid accelerated learning, and help in their possible transition into formal schools.
Over the years, we’ve recorded inspiring stories of learning growth, one of such beneficiaries is the story of Masouda. Masouda was brought to Kware community by an elderly woman who needed a companion and someone to help with house chores. She has never attended any formal school and started coming to the safe space with an enrolled beneficiary during her free time, as a playtime activity. Seeing how playful she was and to prevent her from distracting other children from learning, the safe space facilitator started engaging her to learn by employing the play method. This piqued her interest in learning, and she slowly started learning the alphabets. When Masouda joined the safe space program, she couldn’t write or read, however now she can write all the letters of the alphabets, read out some letter sounds, and recognize certain numbers.
Masouda’s story isn’t a singular occurrence, we’ve had other children like Bakir, Sheriff come to our safe space having never been to school, and yet are at different stages of learning; blending sounds, adding numbers, and reading out short phrases. The safe space caters to the basic learning needs of these children and helps us build their foundation for a learned future.
