Dear Supporters,
First and foremost, our sincere apologies for the last report we published in June 2016. It was mistakenly posted, however your support has been of immense importance to us.
The identification and recognition of persons with disabilities through the issuance of Special CNIC (SCNICs) would not only help the individuals access their rights, but also allow the government to make adequate budgetary allocations for persons with disabilities, which is essential for their welfare and socio-economic inclusion.
In the words of an elderly person on a wheelchair who came to get his SCNIC processed in our camp in March this year, “I do not even know the benefits this Special Identity Card has” – this was a challenge we took up while the Government became occupied with the verification of all CNICs. Since the last registration drive, where around 200 persons with disabilities were registered for SCNIC, we have been working to research the benefits and disseminate the information to persons with disabilities.
We researched benefits provided by the government and other public institutions beginning with the districts of Sindh. We also spread awareness regarding SCNICs and how institutions can play their part in facilitating more persons with disabilities to update the benefits provided. Currently, as per policies, special benefits are available in the areas of residence, employment, health, education, financial assistance, travel, postal services, assistive aids and custom relaxation on automobiles. Details of benefits are available at the following link: The Sindh Differently able persons (Employment, Rehabilitation and Welfare) Act, 2014
Simultaneously, stakeholders from the government were approached to arrange for the registration drive to be run smoothly in the districts of Sindh.
These efforts would all be futile in all aspects without your support and encouragement, so thank you for standing by us in this venture!
