GIRL POWER PROJECT

REPORT TO GLOBALGIVING MAY 2018

Organisation: ChildHelp Sierra Leone

Country:        Sierra Leone

Project Locations: Bombali District

Donor:           GlobalGiving Foundation (UK/USA)

Amount of money raised: $14,885

Number of beneficiaries supported: 217 Impoverish and underprivileged Girls reached

Description:

The Girl Power Project is a life changing by design activity which needs attention. Our attention focuses on the neediest 217 poorest girls, with the message of accessing education and training, don’t be left behind and to avoid and end child marriages, as this would break the cycle of poverty. Through such support, your generous donations contributed and received were used on the basis of alleviating girl-child illiteracy and poverty, be role models with change mechanisms for a better community. Support from GlobalGiving Foundation, friends and partners provided free tuition, mentoring, healthy meals, clothes, school supplies, and health Pads to these girls, but no family support service was provided at this time. These donations made it happen for girls to access and retain in schools, also given voices as change agents against issues affecting them before.

There are still constraints for more rural poor girl-children to access and complete a basic cycle of quality education and trade skills training. These Girls should be lifted out of extreme poverty, marginalization, provide unlimited access to basic facilities, able to read or write and be self reliant. ChildHelp is in need of more books, uniforms, transport facility to and from schools and other costs, which is a barrier to access and retain in school always. There is an economical and social change which might increase costs from May 2018. Because of this, there will be a high dropping rate of girls and an increase in forceful marriages practices in hidden communities out of reach of government and human rights, which will be against the laws of the republic of Sierra Leone, launch in 2017 to end such practice. We are now experiencing challenges that will be tough. Though it will be not be easy, but we believe in you, with our lessons learnt and expansion, we will do more. Your support is needed to alleviate extreme poverty. Extreme poverty has led poor parents and their children into illegal practices such as dropping out of schools for early marriages to fight for survival.

Continuous and increased donations will help us to provide girls in 2018/19 academic year with school fees, bags, uniforms, solar study lamps, a laptop, a bicycle, monthly caring, power mentoring and social justice, etc to access and stay in schools. While we served these girls, there are more than 5,000 kids in our area going hungry and loneliness every day, dropped out schools and abused, trapped in slavery and traditional harmful practices including early marrying and been marginalized in their husband homes since 2017, which need attention in this 2018. Your Little-by-Little donations will improve girls' learning and attendance in an inclusive environment protected from harm with a sustained better life.

ChildHelp wish to extend thanks to you as one of our fine supporters, who has worked with us to meet the need of our girls left behind. Thanks to our able GlobalGiving Foundation and its donors, GPEDC, COL, John Nadolski and friends, Anthropology Compassion, Child Help Line International, Bradley families, Girls Not Brides, Anne Franks Fonds etc, for such great assistances.

The service of GlobalGiving as been so great and exciting which we have enjoyed so much. A great platform with discipline and governed policy. We say Thanks to GlobalGiving for good work well done, especially in issues relating to funding. Thanks again to all our Donors, including our recurring donors, who has been with us since to help us make it happen. Your partnership, donations, love and concerns, means the world to us! We love you very much.

Thank you! You have made a real difference in the lives of the children we serve and ChildHelp our active organisation. Thanks to you once more and God bless you.

With gratitude,

Sincerely,

Kaprie J G Thoronka
