Summary

The repercussions of the Ebola Virus Disease in Sierra Leone had multi-dimensional with detrimental effects on young girls. No one is more vulnerable than an uneducated adolescent girl, living in poverty. If empowered, can dramatically improve the wellbeing of their families and their communities. Our 2017 Girl Power Project is a transformational project, targeting girls entering the most vulnerable juncture of their lives, facing their choices that will lead them to a negative or positive life.

Challenge

Hundreds of disadvantaged and marginalized girls in the rural are still suffering and need supports. Their care givers earn less than $2 a day. Girls' enrolments schools in September 2016, are at risk of dropping out of schools to complete their education and transition to higher institutions or enroll and stay in schools. They are vulnerable to disease, early marriage and pregnancy, poor or no access to education, severe human rights violations, gender discrimination and lack of social justice.

Solution

Girls' learning is hindered by a lack of teaching and learning resources and reduced learning time in school. Provision of school fees and items, income generating support, Power capacity mentors and change agents will address girls health care, education, micro-enterprise, social justice, and empowerment. This will Increase access, strengthen girls' learning and retention in schools; ensure girls learning is inclusive and protected and also girls power to change their peers and environments.

Long-Term Impact

Addressed multiple, interrelated barriers marginalised girls face in completing quality basic education. Improved learning, retention and attendance. Produce educated graduates with basic and trade skills. Education before marriage end child marriage, delays first birth and reduce maternal deaths. Raise demand for girls' education and girl-led community awareness. Produce female role models in society and peer support mechanisms for girls. Protect girls from Gender-Based Violence and advocates.
