Sport is one of the best tools to promote gender equality worldwide. Girls in the Lead (GIL) aims at promoting gender equality by empowering girl's and women's organisations in the field of sport for development. For that purpose, GIL offers an international network and interactive online learning platform for gender practitioners in sports, opening the opportunity for best-practice exchange and encouraging the interdisciplinary sharing of knowledge within national and international contexts.
Gender Equality still does not exist in sports. International sports institutions are largely managed by male officials. In many countries, girls and women have limited access to sports. A wide range of girls' empowerment organizations in the field of sport for development have created innovative methodologies in order to tackle this problem. These organisations need an international platform enhancing exchange, offering capacity building measures and giving them an impactful global voice.
GIL intends to solve this problem by supporting the capacity building of girls' and women's empowering organizations in three areas: program design, impact assessment and advocacy. Additionally, the platform opens the opportunity for best-practice exchange and encourages the interdisciplinary sharing of knowledge among the sport for development organisations. Finally, the network offers the opportunity to speak with a common voice, in order to tackle gender inequality on a macro level.
The project will support the development of at least 6 girl's and women's empowering organizations in the field of sports for development in 6 countries worldwide. This will provide a high number of girls and women better access to sports and movement. Gender Equality will get more awareness and importance within the international sport for development context.
