Project Report | Dec 8, 2024
DCT Winter Update 2024

By Dr Graham Cory | Chair

The bricks, mortar and infrastructure of the new Children’s Home in Darjeeling are now in place, thanks entirely to the generosity of our global supporters. If anyone should doubt the good which even the smallest donation can do, five minutes with any one of ‘our’ children would quickly reassure them. In truth, the success of our work is not measured in dollars spent or square feet of flooring tiled but in the quality of life provided to children, individually and collectively. And not just the quality of their lives today but in the capacity we help each child build to compete successfully in the world after they leave us.

Our supporters have financed the replacement of poor accommodation with warm, dry and safe dormitories; good catering facilities; a great multi-purpose activity room; new water tanks; and a secure boundary wall. The new accommodation has enabled us to provide maths, English and computer classes; eye, dental and mental health clinics; and health awareness classes for girls. The continuing generosity of our supporters is enabling us to make great strides in replacing pitifully thin mattress; substituting new wardrobes for the old cupboards; hanging curtains in the dormitories; and guaranteeing sufficient drinking water 365 days of the year.

Let me end with an up-to-date snapshot of our work. (Much more can be gleaned from the website). We recently held a mental health awareness day at the Home, which highlighted the importance of mental health and offered practical solutions for managing stress and anxiety. The interactive sessions addressed common stressors such as academic pressure and social expectations; they encouraged the children to share feelings with trusted individuals; addressed bullying in schools and how to deal with it; and discussed way to develop assertiveness in order to improve confidence and communication skills. Overall, the session was very well received, by staff and children alike.

Thank you!
