Last three months were fulfilling as a team we were able to reach out to more than 2000 students with our WaSH and MHM workshops in the government higher primary schools in Chikkabanavara, Yelahanka BEO, doddagubbi and governement high schools in Abbigere.

Water, sanitation and hygiene in school makes a visible impact on the health and hygiene of the children. Anything you teach the children are most effective since its contagious. It will be spread among their friends, family and neighbourhood which ultimately brings out the wonderful outcome in keeping the environment clean and improving their good health and hygiene practices. By reaching out to the govt schools, we are reaching out to an entire community.

To improve the best hygiene practices among the beneficiaries on WASH components within schools, a sensitization workshop was conducted for students in multiple statges. Initially students were oriented on the importance of maintaining quality sanitary toilets, hygienic use of toilets, personal hygiene, and the importance of hand washing with soap. We enabled the children to practice good health and hygiene practices and as a result, this improves their health conditions by reducing the incidence of water-borne diseases and infections.

Hygiene components was discussed through visual aids emphasizing the topics in detail, specifically hand washing is one of the most important interventions for human health and development and it is a universal necessity. WaSH workshop was common to both boys and girls students and we have given an exclusive attention to the issues and sigma any girl student go through in their life.

We have conducted a session on the importance of maintaining and practicing menstrual hygiene, how and why to use the sanitary napkins and safe disposal of sanitary napkins. We have emphasized on the myths and taboos related to menstruation. Students were educated on the importance of adopting good menstrual hygiene practice to enjoy good health in pursuing their education.

Beyond this, we have helped constructing the toilet units in all the schools to help the students. We have organized an inauguration of 22 new toilet units in the government schools, as part of the Girls Glory Project of Reaching Hand. The local panchayat bodies, students, and teachers took part in this event. The new toilet block has a very elegant look and is spacious enough for the girls and boys and expected to fulfill the needs of the girls to a larger extent as they face major issues during the menstruration.

The coordinator carried out regular monitoring visits to 4 schools to ensure the smooth construction as per the plan proposed. During the visit the contractor was also present to discuss with the Head Master and the SDMC. We have appointed "WaSH champions" from each school and established the WaSH committee to make sure that the changes are sustainable and the students are practicing it on a daily basis to keep the toilet units clean.

Looking forward to reach out to many more school going children in the rural and villages of Karnataka in the next year.
