The Flaming Light: Empowering Girls in Post-Quake

By Shilpa Lamichhane | Executive Director

The Flaming Light: Empowering Girls in Post-Quake Nepal

The "Girls Better After Quake" initiative has continued to make impactful strides in Nepal, providing young girls affected by the earthquake with tailored support and empowering skills. With unwavering backing from donors, local communities, and volunteers, we’ve expanded our programs to offer vocational training in relevant skills like sewing, weaving, and sustainable agriculture. These skills provide essential paths toward economic independence for girls in Nepal’s rural areas, where formal employment is limited. Additionally, our art therapy sessions offer a valuable outlet for processing trauma, while digital learning hubs help bridge gaps in education, particularly in remote areas.

A notable milestone has been the establishment of a community library in Nepal, stocked with books in Nepali and digital resources reflecting the local culture. This library serves as a sanctuary for continuous learning, where girls gather, share experiences, and deepen their love for education. We’ve also strengthened our digital literacy efforts with second-hand computers, allowing girls to access online learning and gain critical skills for future opportunities. These resources are crucial in keeping education accessible, especially in regions where infrastructure remains a challenge.

Our environmental awareness programs, tailored to Nepal’s needs, focus on sustainable practices and conservation education, teaching the girls about stewardship of their communities. These activities foster a deeper connection to the land and inspire a sense of responsibility for preserving it. The initiative’s community impact extends beyond the girls themselves, inspiring families and neighbors who are now more supportive of girls’ education and aspirations, helping to reshape traditional views on gender roles and education.

Looking forward, our vision remains strong. We are working to scale up these vocational and digital training programs and are actively exploring partnerships with local businesses to provide internship opportunities that offer real-world experience. Additionally, we plan to introduce health and wellness programs to support the girls’ physical and emotional well-being, ensuring a holistic approach to their development. This progress is made possible by the steadfast support of our donors and partners, who enable us to continue building a brighter, more resilient future for these young girls in Nepal.
