Educate Girls targets 100% enrollment, higher attendance and improved learning outcomes for all girls by creating “Community Ownership” of government schools. The strategy of parent based “School Management Committees (SMCs)” to facilitate school improvement has proved to be very successful. The number of schools with separate girls' toilets and drinking water facilities has increased from 44% to 71% and from 46% to 82% respectively.
However to overcome the challenge of working with first generation learners whose parents are unable to improve learning outcomes, Educate Girls has created village based volunteers recognized as “Team Balika”
Team Balika are village based volunteers who facilitate scalable and sustainable community owned programs. These champions for girl child education animate the principles of ‘My Village, My Problems and I am the Solution’. They spread awareness on the importance of girl child education and strengthen school management.
The success of Team Balika and Creative Learning Techniques (CLT) kits was seen when 140 Team Balika members increased Hindi reading by 25%, oral English by 20% and Math skills by 28% in just three months.
With additional support Educate Girls aims to enhance creative learning techniques by scaling the number of SMC members from 40794 to 65000 and Team Balika from 620 to 1000.
