Generating opportunities for indigenous community

For the Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios, it is a great pleasure to receive the first donation from the GlobalGiving platform, which will help fulfill the dreams of higher education for some young Indigenous students from Mitú – Vaupés.

Regarding the progress of our institutional educational project in this department, we are currently in the enrollment period. We hope to increase the number of students; however, by March of this year, we will have a report on the variations between the academic periods of the second semester of 2024 and the first semester of 2025.

We highlight that 15 students graduated last semester, as follows:

• 6 in Accounting
• 4 in Business Administration
• 1 in Occupational Health Administration
• 4 in Administration in Workplace Safety and Health

With your support, we will continue pursuing our goal of facilitating access to higher education for the Indigenous communities of our country.

The Amazon region in Colombia is one of the regions of greatest poverty and vulnerability where the largest number of indigenous peoples of our country are grouped, contributing to their training process in higher education will contribute to improving conditions and closing gaps in education, enabling the conservation of these cultures in the territories, particularly in the university centers of Mitú and Inírida more than 80% is indigenous population, in these university centers the following communities and indigenous peoples have been identified within the classrooms:

1. Campus Inirida:

• Indigenous peoples  (language): 12

• Indigenous Communities (Territory): 19

• Indigenous Students: 60

• % Indigenous Students: 47%

2.  Campus Mitu: 

• Indigenous peoples  (language): 57

• Indigenous Communities (Territory): 16

• Indigenous Students: 144

• % Indigenous Students: 53%

UNIMINUTO Mitú since 2016 we have accompanied 159 indigenous youths belonging to the communities Desano, Wanano, Barasana, Bocas del Querari, Cachivera, Piracemo, Piracuara, among others, in their technical and professional training process. Of these young people, all have managed to complete their processes and graduate from UNIMINUTO Rectoría Oriente.

Currently, we have 57 indigenous youth from the indigenous communities of Monfort Papuri, Piraparaná, Murutinga and Puerto Asis; and 16 indigenous youth from indigenous populations such as Piratapuyo, Macuna, Tucano, Guanano, Desanoo and Cubeo.
