Dear KEDV Supporters,
Thanks to your continued support, women’s cooperatives across Türkiye are taking inspiring steps to build climate-resilient and sustainable livelihoods. One of the most powerful examples of this transformation is EKODOKU, the Sustainable Living Cooperative in Hatay, a region deeply affected by both the earthquake and the climate crisis.
EKODOKU is a women-led cooperative that brings together circular economy principles, responsible production, and environmental awareness in the silk weaving. The cooperative is known for reviving the nearly extinct “Hatay Sarisi” silkworm, a local species once thought to be lost, the cooperative has become a symbol of ecological renewal and women’s leadership in sustainability.
After the devastating earthquake, EKODOKU faced immense challenges: electricity shortages, damaged production spaces, bureaucratic hurdles, and the trauma of displacement. Yet, with KEDV’s immediate support, the cooperative rebuilt its wooden production area, restored its eco-friendly infrastructure, and began weaving again. These efforts saved the Hatay Sarisi silkworm species and rekindled the women’s determination to sustain their livelihoods.
Today, EKODOKU continues to grow as a living example of climate-resilient production.
The cooperative uses “peace silk techniques” that cause no harm to silkworms, incorporates renewable energy in its processes, and minimizes waste through recycling and natural dyeing methods. It also provides training for women and young people to engage in fair and environmentally responsible work.
EKODOKU’s story shows what happens when women have access to the resources, knowledge, and solidarity they need: resilience blooms, nature heals, and communities thrive.
We are deeply grateful for your ongoing solidarity and invite you to continue sharing our project within your networks so more women can lead the way to climate justice.
With gratitude and determination,
Selen Gökdeniz
