Summary

Women in rural communities face significant barriers to political participation, including poverty, low political awareness, limited leadership opportunities, family responsibilities, cultural restrictions, and gender discrimination. Male-dominated political structures, lack of support networks, and limited access to information further reduce their engagement. As a result, women remain underrepresented in decision-making processes, local governance, and political leadership, reinforcing social

Challenge

Women make up nearly 42% of Sri Lanka's population, yet only 4-7% hold political decision-making positions. Social, cultural, and economic barriers, along with male-dominated political spaces, limit women's participation. This initiative in Trincomalee empowers women through awareness, leadership training, and advocacy, encouraging engagement in governance and elections while promoting gender equality, inclusion, and stronger representation in democratic processes.

Solution

This initiative empowers women through awareness programs, leadership training, and community engagement. It promotes women's participation in leadership, decision-making, and community development while preventing gender-based violence and discrimination in political spaces. Activities, including International Women's Day events, help build confidence, raise awareness of rights, and encourage active civic engagement, creating safer, more inclusive, and gender-equal communities.

Long-Term Impact

The project will increase women's political participation, leadership skills, and involvement in community development. Through awareness, training, and advocacy, it will reduce gender-based discrimination and violence, promote inclusive decision-making, and strengthen local governance. By empowering women leaders and challenging social barriers, the initiative will advance gender equality, inspire future generations, and create lasting positive change in Trincomalee.
