Youth in Jinja area have been planting fruit trees with their communities and schools. These trees provide a tangible benefit as well as engaging young people in ecology and building green leaders and entrepreneurs over time. Nurseries are founded with local and global support.
Girls 4 Climate has been working with youth in communities and schools to create hubs for climate action. We have so far planted hundreds of thousands of trees. The outsourcing of seedlings has proven to be very expensive and unreliable, however. We need to be able to establish our own tree nurseries locally and train youth who want to be their stewards.
The tree nurseries will help us provide fruit and medicinal tree seedlings. We mainly focus on fruit trees because of the nutritional benefits and fast growth rates. This project will create locally-led nurseries with sustainable approaches to starting, maintaining and harvesting from them. Together we can empower youth in their communities, rather than out-sourcing or focusing on urban areas alone. We look forward to seeing the fruits!
The project will provide 10,000 fruit tree seedlings over a year, to both schools and communities which will be a source of food and contribute to climate change mitigation.
