Fostering Collective Learning Spaces Worldwide

By Darija Miletic | Co-president

oikos Camp 2023
oikos Camp 2023

What has been evolving in the oikos Transforming Education initiative the last few months?

1. oikos Academy

Achievements:

oikos Academy has been making some tremendous steps towards creating collective learning spaces. We have been allying with the deans and co-presidents of Copernicus Alliance to collaborate in co-creating a process fostering these collective learning spaces and exploring ways of integrating them into Higher Education. oikos Academy team has been designing a month-long process composed of a diversity of events (online, hybrid, onsite) both on local and global level to navigate complexity, find actionable solutions, challenge and elevate the learning process of Higher Education.

Learnings:

  • Learner driven spaces are truly possible between student networks and institutions and faculty
  • There is a momentum for a shift in paradigm on how the Higher Education shapes generations of future leaders
  • Openness and creativity can do wonders when presented with a challenge

Future aspirations:

Finalizing the outline of the agenda together with the Copernicus Alliance, getting many people on the same boat for this incredible journey in fall and raising funds to make this chain of events free and as accessible as possible for everyone eager to join.

2. Transforming Education Squad

Achievements:

The TE squad has successfully fostered a culture of critical thinking and social awareness among oikos chapters. 4 chapters are regularly actively engaging, with 4 more ready to commit over the upcoming months (reaching 25 people from 7 different nations - German, India, Nigeria, France, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Austria). They have been co-creating spaces for meaningful dialogue, knowledge exchange, and personal growth. Additionally, 2 chapters participated in faculty and student dialogue on their local campus and brought some very insightful experiences to their peers from the Squad.

Learnings:

  • Individual chapter check-ins support is very effective when we are challenged with maintaining consistency in chapter´s attendance on the TE Squad meetings;
  • More and more chapters are attracted with interesting topics and speakers;
  • Networking with chapters during oikos International Chapter Conference (ICC) in Copenhagen and other international community gatherings, help build rapport with chapters.

Future aspirations:

Role play activities and workshops on proposal writing; consistently engaging chapters; consistency in chapter attendance; aim to reach 2 new chapters every month.

3. oikos CAMP

Achievements:

The oikos CAMP Team has been working hard on recruiting teams created around projects aiming to transform education, along with finding partners to support the realization of the project. With many smaller milestones conquered in the last few months, the team is looking forward to oikos CAMP happening in August. With some more preparatory work on the way, the team faced challenges in terms of students commitment due to time constraints as well as securing enough funding for the project. The planning is evolving and we are almost ready to host our participants; launched a communication campaign and prepared logistics for CAMP 23 now focusing on finding further teams and additional funding.

Learnings:

  • Challenges in finding participants due to students' time constraints & limited availability;
  • Challenges in finding financial partners;
  • Well-working team is the most important thing to stay motivated if a project doesn’t evolve as planned.

Future aspirations:

Securing the necessary funding; finding 2 or 3 more teams; designing the flow of the CAMP week and hosting the event.

Impact stories and testimonials that make us very proud…

Testimonials:

“For me, the TE-squad meetups have always been a great source of inspiration and motivation. Every month (except May), we met online to discuss interesting topics. I loved listening to the stories and advice from the experts, but also from oikees from other chapters. No matter whether we spoke about challenges and insecurities we're facing in transforming education and possible solutions to them, about rethinking economics, or about inside- and outside lobbying – I always learned a lot. I also really enjoyed how interactive and open the dialogue was. What is more, I experienced these meetups as a safe space where everybody feels seen and welcomed. All in all, I am looking forward to our next meeting – and to everything that is still going to come!”

“A touching moment was to reconnect with former camp teams from the previous 2 iterations around the communication campaign. Their sharing was really touching and gave us a lot of energy as a team.

It showed us that CAMP really is a valuable space for everyone involved and worth all of our efforts!”
